Tennis retirements: how we settle Premium game handicaps

A Premium game handicap is graded as a win after a retirement only when no legal completion of the match can stop it from covering. In every other case it is void.

A retirement should not void a handicap whose outcome is already irreversible. Covering at the partial score is not enough: it might stop covering if the match continued. Settlement checks every legal completion before recording a win.

Quick rule: we total the games played, apply the line and check every final score that is still possible. It is graded as a win only if all of them cover the handicap. If even one completion produces a push or loss, it is void.

Win if it was already irreversible; void in every other case

The policy is favourable and asymmetric. A mathematically decided outcome keeps the win. A pick that could still stop covering is not turned into a loss: it is returned as void. We do not infer who would have won; we enumerate only legally possible final scores.

EVERY FINAL SCORE COVERSWin

The advantage cannot disappear even if the match is completed.

AT LEAST ONE FINAL SCORE DOES NOT COVERVoid

The market did not yet have an unconditional outcome.

If data is missing or a tie-break cannot be interpreted safely, caution prevails.

The match that prompted the change: Varillas–Seyboth Wild

At the Como Challenger, the pick was Juan Pablo Varillas +3.5 games at 1.87. The match ended in retirement at 4-6, 7-6 and 4-3 from Varillas's perspective. Both players had won 15 games.

Varillas was level at 15-15 in games. Even if he lost the remaining three games, he would finish −3; with +3.5 he would still cover by 0.5. The outcome was already unconditional.

The previous system saw the retirement label before reading the score and voided every pick. The new process keeps the match marked as retired, stores the partial score and grades this pick as a win.

A traceable historical correction

We reviewed every Premium game handicap previously voided because of a retirement. Four cases were found and recalculated using only the games played and the line and odds published before the match.

VARILLAS +3.5Win15-15 in games
LEONG +3.5Win16-10 in games
BICKNELL +5.5VoidCould still stop covering
ROTTGERING +3.5Void4-8 in games

Two picks change from void to win and two remain void. The correct adjustment adds +1.60 units at flat stake and +1.60 units using the published stakes. Bicknell was corrected from win to void through the audited record because the handicap could still stop covering.

Bookmakers do not follow one universal rule

There is no universal standard. The official rules of VERSUS keep markets whose outcomes are already determined. The RETAbet rules state that a game-handicap bet remains valid when its outcome is already certain; otherwise it is void.

Deep Tennis AI applies that verifiable standard to the Premium record: unconditional result, win; every other scenario, void.

What does not change

This rule only applies to Premium game-handicap picks when a match starts and ends in retirement. A walkover with no games played remains void. Totals, match winners, set handicaps and correct scores retain their current settlement rules.

The change does not alter the pick, odds or stake published before the match. It only improves how an exceptional outcome is settled using the real score.

VERIFIABLE RECORD

The rule is now active.

Corrected results remain in the public record alongside every other Premium win, loss and void.
